Abstract:
Abstract: Subgingival glycine powder air-polishing of root surfaces enhances the treatment of root surfaces and at the same time reduces the damage of the supporting soft tissue. Particles of the glycine powder are smaller than the particles of the previously used sodium bicarbonate powder, which left bigger abrasive traces on the root surface and also caused greater damage to the surrounding soft tissue. Objective: To examine the efficiency of subgingival glycine powder air-polishing on the reduction of bacteria causing pathological changes on periodontal tissues. Material and methods: The research involved 46 participants of both sexes with aggressive forms of periodontal diseases. Periodontal pockets in the treatment group were processed with subgingival air-polishing, while in the control group we used a sonic scaler. Samples of subgingival biofilm were taken from 5 deepest periodontal pockets before and after therapy. This was followed by a PCR analysis to detect 5 putative periodontal pathogens. To assess the state of oral hygiene and gingival inflammation we used FMPS and FMBS, while the size of periodontal tissue damage was established by NPE. Results: The PCR analysis showed an equal reduction in pathogens in both examined groups. Both the FMPS, FMBS and the NPE reduced in both groups. Conclusion: The new therapy in processing periodontal pockets, the subgingival glycine powder air-polishing, proved to be equally successful in pathogen reduction as the conventional therapy, sonic scaling.
