Analysis of chemical parameters of bottled carbonated water

Abstract:
Due to growing concerns that the ingredients of drinking water can have adverse health effects, consumption of bottled carbonated and flavored carbonated water has increased. Mineral content of bottled water is significantly different and it is necessary to present the content on all products that are used in human consumption. In this study we have determined the content of cations and anions in eight bottled carbonated water from different manufacturers as well as electric conductivity and pH value. The methods of analysis which determined the presence of cations and anions in the water were: atomic-absorption spectroscopy (Na+, K+), complexometry (Ca ++, Mg ++), the Mohr method (Cl-) and potentiometry, standard addition method (F-). Electric conductivity is determined by conductometric and pH value by potentiometric method. The content of the tested cations and anions was declared on only a few products. All obtained results are in accordance with Regulations on the safety of drinking water of the Republic of Srpska. The results show that the fluoride content were significantly below the optimal level of 1 mg /L, recommended by the World Health Organisation.
