AFM analysis of nanostructure of the Resilience Orthodontic Bonding Solutions Adhesive

Abstract:
We have analyzed in this paper with help of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) nanostructure of the Resilience Orthodontic Bonding Solutions Adhesive which is being most often used in the orthodontic practice. After determining properties of adhesive, correlation has been established between the nanostructure of the analyzed adhesive and bond strength of the orthodontic bracket. On the basis of AFM images of analyzed adhesive, using the correlation of arithmetic averages of the bond strength (I) and average roughness of adhesives (Ra, Rq, Rzijs, Rz), we came to a conclusion that with the increase in average roughness of adhesive also increases bond strength (I). We compared obtained results with other commonly used adhesives. We have found that with all roughness parameters (Ra, Rz, Rzijs and Rq), the strongest bond was achieved with the Resilience Orthodontic Bonding Solutions, followed by Heliosit, Orthodontic (Ivoclar, Vivadent), GC Fuji Ortho LC, and the weakest bond with ConTec LC − Dentarum. Greater roughness of the Resilience Orthodontic Bonding Solutions at nano level likely enables higher number of prickles penetrating microcavities formed by acid application. Greater roughness is caused by chemical structure of composite material.
